I have alot to say today , not sure why, just took in a lot of information I need to digest I suppose!

Let me start with Nirvana.  I am a fan, a pretty big one.  I had the pleasure of seeing them live.  I read the books, I see the movies.  There are a lot of people who will call them overrated, and I get it.  I disagree, but I get it.  To some they were a sloppy punk-ish band with indie principles on the biggest record label in the country.  The people who believe this were often clinging to their last Poison album while musing over who does better solos, George Lynch or Nuno Bettencourt (Nuno btw).

Nirvana was something different, and that I will not get into now.  It’s more about Kurt.  I remember the day he died. Where I was when I heard.  How me and my friends reacted.  But he killed himself (although he have been murdered, Rent “Kurt and Courtney” and you decide!). He ran away.  He couldn’t beat the drugs, he hated his wife so he bailed.  SO as much as I respect Nirvana and the music, I cannot come along on the deity worship he recieves.  Admire what the man did, but I am not sure we should admire the man.

Which brings me to Guitar Hero 5.  Yes Kurt is in it.  He plays Nirvana songs.  Thats ok right?  A tribute perhaps even.  But here is where the furor erupts.  You can UNLOCK Kurt.  So now, the anti pop god, the man who in life would supposedly fight the mainstream (he didnt though), his avatar can sing David Bowie, Billy Idol, Public Enemy and yes, even Bon Jovi!    Is it direspectful?  Yeah, probably.  But to sit around and be OUTRAGED by it?  Cmon.  Relax.  To some degree, its so “anti the establishment” he wasnted to create, he might find it funny in someways.  Plus, never forget Courtney owns him. Literally.  Everything goes through her.  She can whine all she wants and try to save public face, but we all know the truth.  She signed off on it.  Below it what I am talking about!

See now I have tired myself out and I have not started on the VMA’s. They were brutal.  Should I be surprised? No. I guess not, but I did not think they would be THAT bad!  Most of the live performances sucked, and went over the top in attempt to cover up the fact that the music was disposable and interchangeable.  Muse, Green Day, and Jay-Z all brought it. They got up. They played.  They let the music do the talking.

Every one is talking about Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift.  I dislike Taylor.  Not bc I don’t like her music.  I have personal reasons.  I really do.  I will not get into them, but I will mention her southern accent is ridiculous, she is from READING, PA!!  Even Taylor did not deserve that though, and I am glad Beyonce gave her the time at the end, even if she said nothing worthwhile.  The whole situation just proves Matt and Trey had it right.

The whole production of teh VMAs were terrible though. Awkward cut backs from commercials, Russell Brand was AWFUL and i actually typically like him.  You can tell they muzzled him.  Plus apparently anyone can jump onstage at anytime, Kanye, Lil Mama during Jay-Z etc.  Anayway , I guess the point is, the show was bad.

Rememeber anti-establishment Nivana on the VMA’s?  Let me bring it full circle! (oh and Wilson Phillips and B2M giving them the award is funny too)

…this is how ya do it.

Not that I am, or that you should be, but damn they were efficient!  Some guys drool at nudie mags. Not me, I get winter nipples when I walk by the iStore.  Maybe I should be looking on the Philly Craigslist for “Macbooks, cheap”.

I have been talking a bit about the new project with Dave Grohl back on drums, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone age on Guitar and vocals and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin on bass.  They have made a few surprise appearances, so some footage, albeit so so quality , have shown up on the net.  Here is video of them doing a tune called New Thing!

No secret, I am a Pearl Jam fan.  Do I love all the new music?  No, I don’t.  Do I find a song or too I enjoy on each disc?  Usually.  Sure they are not Ten or Vs. (I have the cassette that is still labeled 5 against 1  before they pulled it and changed the name!!), but you can’t expect them to write a classic every time.  Pearl Jam is and will always be a touring band.  Epic live shows, showcasing tunes old and new, some covers, and a performance that does not end until Eddie finishes his bottle of wine.  I always look forward to a new Pearl Jam release and the new one, Backspacer, is no exception.  They are off to a good start with the new single The Fixer, and the footage below give me more hope as I am hearing some good things in there!  Enjoy

Pearl Jam – Backspacer Short

For those that can put the “purist” in you aside, check this out.  It is hip hop artist P.O.S. doing his take on “Why Go” and I think he KILLS it!!  Very good stuff.

I will preface this by telling you , that I know these guys from my days in Harrisburg and we may have had some drinks together.  That said, that’s not the reason i am peddling there wares and by wares I mean music and video.

The Jellybricks are a power pop 4 piece that write some great catchy tunes, it you dig that style of music.  Recently Iwas glad to see them get some well deserved pub from Rolling Stone for the video for “Ruin Us”  the article can be read right here

I don’t think its a secret that I am a big Phillies fan. As such, I was shocked and saddened at the loss of Harry Kalas yesterday. I have spent summer after summer listening to him call games better than anyone in the business. He had an amazing way of taking even the most fast paced day and slowing it down, giving me a second to relax and breathe. He went getting ready for a game, which is the only way it could be. Summer won’t be the same without the birthday shout outs to “Florence in Manayunk celebrating her 89th toodayyy” or the “outttaa herrres”. We’ll miss you HK.
